All Rights Reserved Website by                    Forest House Designs	KINDERGARTEN Our full day kindergarten is Department of Education Certified and is taught by a Rhode Island Certified Early Childhood Education Teacher.  The children in the kindergarten are required to follow the guide lines set forth by the state of Rhode Island.   The children’s academic day includes:   MATH: Some areas of math include simple addition and subtraction, classifying, counting, understanding and writing numbers, develop awareness of sorting, grouping, measuring and simple geometry by using different types of manipulatives and problem solving.   SCIENCE: Exploring the world around us by hands on experiments and having the opportunity to question is a big part of science.  Children will discuss what they see in their environment especially things that change.  They will make predictions, learn about other living species and explore physical changes, causes and effects.   SOCIAL STUDIES: The children will discover our world, our ancestors and families of today.  They will learn about the past and present, focus on historical events and learn about geography.   LITERACY: Language and literacy is the key to all communication.  The children will read, write, listen and speak. A majority of the children’s morning is spent on literacy.  The children will both read independently as well as read with their teacher in a small group setting.  The children write daily in their “kid writing journals” and we are proud to say that our first year kindergarten students graduated reading on a first grade level and knew 75 sight words. ART & MUSIC: This area comprises of dance (movement); explore music with instruments, use their imagination with drama and even the visual arts.    The kindergarten children have daily access to the All Purpose Room for use of using the computers as well as use of the library area and listening center.  They have outdoor time allowing them access to burn off a lot of their energy by running, climbing, sliding and crossing the monkey bars.   Our kindergarten children will move on from here.  They leave The Martin School reading, writing and ready to meet the many challenges ahead of them.
